I want to love this. It's got some legit clever ideas. But oh man is this the WORST laid out rulebook in history. It's like the whole thing was written with a sort of ADHD stream-of-consciousness, rather than edited and organized into sections. Like the author was on his way to the printer with the manuscript, and the wind blew it all away, and he quickly gathered up all the pages in random order and just decided to print it like that. You'd think there'd be a chapter on Combat as a whole, right? Nah. How to attack monsters is on page 20. How to defend against monsters? Page 52. Modifiers for combat? Scattered throughout the book randomly. Roll tables are scattered (though mercifully collected in the back). Loot/treasure and item rules are scattered. When you find the rules, they're perfectly simple and laid out and easy to follow, but you're just constantly flipping through the book. Like I desperately want to cut the book up, re-organize it, and ship it back to the author in an envelope labeled "Four Against Darkness 2.0"If the game were amazing, I would probably be more forgiving. But I was SO excited to play this, and it's barely a game. Once you make your character, that's almost the only involvement you have. From there it's just rolling, rolling, rolling, rolling. What's the dungeon room? Roll. What's in the room? Roll. Monsters, what kind? Roll. Do they run or fight? Roll. I HAVE to fight them so do I hit them? Roll. Do I dodge? Roll. What kind of treasure? Roll. Next room? Roll. I didn't really DO anything. I could choose to backtrack, I could choose Door A instead of Door B, but I really didn't feel like I was playing a game. It felt like one of those online idle clicker games where the game plays itself, only instead of clicking I was rolling dice.I bought one of the story expansions along with the game, I'm gonna play that next. Maybe having a story will make it more palatable?
Old school fans rejoice! This is a fun little portable book for some on the go gaming solo or with a friend. You can use physical dice or an app on the phone. All you need is some graph paper and a pencil and you are ready to dungeon delve. Rules are simple and there are a few free fan made scenarios available online. I will eventually try my hand at making some content for this game, it seems pretty easy to generate some monsters on the fly with some imagination and some free time. Looking forward to trying the expansions...
I’m a big fan of D&D but I just don’t have time to host or attend a weekly game. This sort of scratches that itch and has loads of additional books that have already been published. If you are so inclined, you can use this book in conjunction with 5e rules and run a sort of rules light solo adventure. I bought the PDF first and enjoyed it so much that I ordered the book as well. The book comes with pages I didn’t see in the PDF such as suggested icons to write on your maps to show what you encountered in the room. Highly recommend.
This is a solitaire dungeon crawl game, but I think that there just is no way to simulate the fun of a role-playing game with just one person. Rolling on tables for absolutely every little thing (which results in a truly random set of encounters) can be a little bit tedious. It also leads to an experience where the majority of what you encounter are isolated events with no story or interrelationship that provides any sort of narrative. There are a lot of rules. I wouldn't call the rule system complex, but there are a ton of ancillary modifications to various rolls that I have had difficulty remembering and finding in the rule book when they come up in the game. I have played several times at this point, and I have found that the difficulty level is pretty low. A lot depends on the rolls you make, but most encounters I have come up against were pretty easy and I have quickly accumulated more gold than my characters can carry (and more than I would ever need to spend on the limited items available). I have decided to continue to play and track both my kills and the treasure accumulated and left in "town." This is not part of the game, but I thought it may add a way to score my party's performance by seeing how many games it takes to have all four characters reach level 5 and to see how much loot I can collect.I was tempted to give this game only 3 stars, but for the limited cost and novelty of having a pen and paper game for one player I think it deserves four.
