American society without Christ? It's here. But - can the glory of Christian culture be revived? Christian culture is dead, asserted John Senior, the late - and noted - Humanities Professor at the University of Kansas. But who killed it? And why? In his classic work, now back in print after several years, Dr. Senior summons the guilty to justice. He details how Western elites came to reject the Christian idea of an orderly universe created by God. Modern man has lost his faith - and now he is losing his mind. Major themes (each backed with a wealth of concise explanation): Why denial of absolute truth is the hallmark of modern culture - and the source of our moral and spiritual depravity The fraud of liberal Christianity The corruption of education, and what to do about it Why modern intellectuals are drawn to Eastern philosophy. Why it is fundamentally opposed

This is a classic for a reason. Before there was Anthony Esolen (and we should all be reading Esolen), there was John Senior. Senior inspired a generation of secular and disaffected young men to enter a monastery in France. In this book he lays the groundwork for his program.
The first of John's duology of masterpieces, Death of Christian Culture, though perhaps on the depressing side, removes the veil from modern thought to critique in an intelligible fashion the ways of thinking that continue to poison the minds of modern man--the bankrupt philosophies that have replaced the philosophically sound Christian ethos that is the true inheritor of the wisdom of the ancient world.
Incredibly insightful book by a talented and wise author. His other book, the restoration of Christian culture, is equally excellent.
Sadly true; tastefully depressing; lamentably accurate diagnose of death - death of the true, good, and beautiful.
This is a life altering book, as is the followup which I also rate with five stars. I am a Benedictine oblate at the Abbey where some students of Prof. Senior now reside. One is the Abbot, another the Prior. I can certainly understand the impact he had on their lives. Every Christian should read both of the books. They will by unaffected.
If you are blessed with a mind for high culture and intellectual pursuits, this book is definitely for you!John Senior writes very well of the problems in contemporary society. My only criticism is that this book is not for the faint of heart--either if you do not want to hear the truth, or if you have difficulty understanding the humanities. No matter one's preference, this is a book for your shelf and worthy of study. John Senior has done us all a great favor.
This is not an entertaining book, nor an easy read. But it is a remarkable study of the Death of Christian Culture. While written nearly 40 years ago, Dr. Senior was a prophet in his own time who recognized where we were headed. It makes the reader think and reflect on what he has seen during his own life, and recognize the fruits of certain actions the public has allowed either by vote and voice or by their silence. This book challenges all of us to take responsibility for who we are and our part in the formation of history. My particular favorite is his reference to the televison as being Satan's "Trojan Horse" into our homes! Think about it...and read his book!
You'd think it was written yesterday. Amazingly accurate, almost poetically written, almost eccentric enough to be comical if the subject were not so dire. But it must be read by all who care about the future of western civilization.
