This book was okay. I've read the wilds series, the Alchemy series and olle wit series and they all read in similar ways. A powerful single male, handsome, wealthy in money/resources, old in nature but looks to be in their twenties/ thirties, seeking out a female to do a job/task that no one else can do. The female character is young, inexperience, alone with no family or with a makeshift one, financially unstable, a bit desperate and in need of a place to live. I wish to read something out of the author's comfort zone.To end this note on the plus side, I do like Ms. Augustine books, and I'll continue to read this series until it comes to an end.

A great start to another series. However, there is no cliffhanger, so it could be read as a stand alone, for those who avoid uncompleted series. Truthfully, there are very few authors that I will start a series with if they aren't yet complete. Donna Augustine is one, because I know that I am going to find myself reading the book again anyways.Wyrd Blood takes place in an alternate universe. It has been devastated by a war and even a hundred years later, most people are just trying to scratch out enough food to live one more day. However, there is a powerful man who seems to be doing something right and is succeeding at providing for his people, Ryker. Donna Augustine's world building is great, as always, and she has created a unique and fascinating world. The h seems more mature than in some of her other series, and the H a little less icy. However, the chemistry is still intense. I also really like all the secondary characters. The story flows extremely well, and the dialogue is good. I did find that there were fewer laugh-out-loud moments, than some of Augustine's previous books, but there's never a dull moment. The story captured my attention and held me captive until I read the last word and the concluding remarks to watch for some of her up coming work... I will definitely be keeping an eye out.

Bugs lives in a world where the powerful want the magical. Magic sprung up fairly unexpectedly, and the world quickly learned that my possessing magic, you have power. Those with magic are called Wyrd Blood. Whether or not you personally are a Wyrd Blood can be irrelevant as long as you can get people who are. I'm currently unsure if most Wyrd Blood are viewed as slaves or not, but in Bugs' experience, having magic is a curse, and she is hiding hers.Bugs lives in the Ruined City with her crew hiding the fact that she is a Wyrd Blood. She doesn't know much about her magic, but she knows that people will try to force her to work for them if they know about her. Bugs and her crew are essentially homeless and in order to survive they have to forage in the Ruined Forest or steal from chuggers that come around their area. Her crew is currently starving. Bugs makes some tough decisions that get her noticed by Ryker.Ryker runs the Valley, and he is a Wyrd Blood. He has a job he needs Bugs to do, and due to some things that Bugs needs to survive, she is stuck helping him out. The danger here for Bugs is that in working with Ryker, people could find out her secret which could lead to them wanting to force her to work for them. Ryker is also getting ready for a war, and Bugs doesn't want her crew anywhere near him.I loved this story. Donna Augustine does a great job first in creating an interesting world, and then creating characters that are just as interesting. She also does a great job in making the characters relatable. Bugs is tough because she has to be. She doesn't care about whether or not she survives, she cares about if her crew does. She will do just about anything to ensure their survival, even if it means her death. She is in a crappy situation. I'm not sure if she really makes the best of it, but she knows she has to deal with it, and she does. She tries to find solutions to the problems that plaque her. She's impressive. On the romance front, feels like something will build with Ryker and Bugs. Ryker hates Bugs at first since she is essentially stealing from his people. However, as they work and train together, Ryker starts to learn more of where Bugs comes from and starts to understand where she is coming from.Ryker is interesting. I feel there is a lot more to learn about him and I'm looking forward to learning more as the series progresses. He has a community that he is responsible for, and in being perhaps the strongest of the Wyrd Blood, there is a lot riding on his shoulders. My biggest issue with him is he's a pretty crappy teacher. One of those who basically throws a problem at someone and tells them to solve it without telling them how. So though he's pretty sexy, he's also somewhat of an ass.We also have good supporting characters in this. Bugs has her crew which are very loyal and more of a family than anything. Ryker has a couple of close friends that work with/ for him and keep things entertaining. This is definitely a well written story that leaves you ready for the next part. Hopefully it comes out soon!

I am a fan of Donna Augustine. I find her romance formula (vulnerable but stubborn women working with, and sometimes for, seemingly hardened, powerful but merciful men, who eventually overcome pride to love each other) is an appealing alternative to the alpha male archetype romance formula. That being said, I also find her books cast the main male protagonist/love interest as underdeveloped. They are often defined by three things: how they treat the Heroine, how they treat the people they lead (they are always leaders of some type of community), and whatever mystical thing they are, such as the cursed king, demigod, or whatever. We never learn much of their history, childhood, or friendship they have. And most disappointing of all, the heroines never ask. This book was no different, and was even worse off because it lacked the rich world building you find (sort of) in her other series. We never learn anything that is not needed outside of basic plot context. It made the book feel flat.Another element that took away from the story was that many reveals that occur are never supported by the backstory. Context of the reveal is provided literally right before the reveal happens. Ex. We learn the male MP is the cursed king right after we learn there was a cursed king. This style takes away any type of impact the reveal would have. We aren't set up for it at all, and so we don't end up caring. I felt myself indifferently watching the female MP react because *she* knew the significance, but we didn't. And that's just not an effective writing style.

The first time I read this book I thought Bugs was a less bad ass version of Dal from Donna Augustine’s Wilds series. Bugs seemed too eager to give up and let Ryker lead her around. It wasn’t until I read it a second time that I appreciated Bugs for who she was; a loner with no education, no family and a rough past who was just trying to survive. I look forward to the next book to see how her character grows and the relationship with Ryker develops.
