Although Dover has huge historically accurate designs they tend to be a little short on the full color reference books. I love this one for trying to span a number of patterns world-wide. If you want new and different rather than historical you should use Dover linears to help you have an accurate baseline, then get your paints, inks out...put on related music and have fun creating your own originals. Use the university libraries for adittional color references.
Some of the patterns were very well designed. Too heavy on Art Nouveau patterns 19 pages, Too little of ethnic patterns such as Chinese,Persia,Turkey,Hawaii,Uzbekistan all 5 combined-13 pages total. But that is my own preference and I can only speak for myself.

As with the first pattern source book I purchased I am pleased with this one. I will defitinely be purchasing other source book in the series.
the book is beautiful but there is not many patterns inside, I was expecting more content. I also don't like the paperback quality
This is a fairly useless purchase in terms of my own need for historic cultural patterns. In this book most appear boring, conservative and expected, though there are exceptions in a few instances. Everything hinges on the use one has for looking at patterns. I use established patterns as a base for further development and layering and I am not sure I can do much with, for example, "designs that are not in their original form."If you have a need for cultural patterns look instead at research collections by Owen Jones or Racinet. These collections are not altered from their historical constructions.
We are a graphic design firm always researching patterns for the products we work with. These patterns provided a great collection of inspiration in intriguing colors and pattern combinations. Great for research, recommend all the lines in the series and would purchase more.
Patterns are not all that interesting in terms of design. There are much better books.
